The size of the cup varies greatly from one woman to another” indicates the senologist, Philippe Sebag. And if there is no scientific data, several online studies make it possible to compare the breasts of women internationally. However, these assessments remain approximate.

Breast size: what defines its evolution with age?
Three major periods mark a change in the volume of the female breast, even if this trend remains relative and can vary from one woman to another:
- From puberty to adulthood: During the puberty phase until adulthood, the structure of the breasts develops, at the internal level (hormonal activity is set up) to reach their “normal” size around the age of 18. “There is often a more or less visible asymmetry between the two which can, if necessary, be corrected by cosmetic surgery for a correction of breast asymmetry” indicates the senologist, Philippe Sebag.
- Pregnancy and breast feeding : “A pregnancy and a period of breastfeeding will modify the volume of the chest quite significantly. The reason: the change in the functioning of the mammary gland itself, which serves as a curve for the breast: “Depending on the overall weight loss following childbirth, the breasts will more or less be emptied of their fat and may tend to fall” specifies the health practitioner, Philippe Sebag.
- The premenopausal phase: “Depending on the women, there may be more or less significant hormonal variations, leading to clinical repercussions on the breasts (tension, pain, heaviness, etc.) and on the menstrual cycles, which will be less regular.” On the other hand, there is noticeably no change in volume during this period.
- During menopause: The change in the morphology of the breasts in women during menopause is also very variable depending on the woman” nuances Dr. Philippe Sebag. He adds: “If we maintain estrogen coverage, there will certainly be few visible variations. On the other hand, if a substitution treatment is medically contraindicated or refused by the patient, there will be a modification of the distribution of fats in the body; the abdominal belt is part of it, accompanied by a sometimes significant increase in volume of the breasts which will bother patients depending on the initial volume of their breasts.
Is breast size genetic?
“In the sense that we all have a more or less predefined “genetic” map, there may be a link as for the transmission of the color of the eyes, the hair… but each woman is really different and will have her own volume and its own breast density” explains the senologist, Philippe Sebag. He continues, “There is no scientifically proven correlation of breast structure and size between a mother and her daughters.”
What diseases can affect breast size?
“None. There are no diseases that change the volume of the breast. However, the size of the breasts can be modified following certain treatments such as radiotherapy; which is however less clear with current treatments, nuance Philippe Sebag, senologist .

Does the pill act on breast volume?
Depending on how women tolerate it, the contraceptive pill may, through hormonal changes, be the cause of a change in the structure of the breast, and explain a slight enlargement linked to this “hormonal inflation”.
What are the risks of too large breasts?
To date, there is no increased risk of breast cancer associated with large breast volume. On the other hand, the clinical examination becomes less reliable with a large chest. It can nevertheless be compensated by diagnostic examinations (2D and 3D mammography and breast ultrasound)” notes Philippe Sebag, senologist. It should also be noted that breast hypertrophy (Editor’s note abnormal increase in its volume) can lead to comorbidities with age due to the impact of the weight on the shoulders and the back essentially (problem of osteoarthritis, pain, etc.) Not to mention the complexes that some women develop, judging their breasts to be too “generous” or pointing out that they is, by their spouse.
Is it medically important to monitor your chest measurement?
“Not at all, unless there is discomfort related to the size of the chest, of course” nuance doctor Philippe Sebag.
How to increase and decrease breast size?
“Depending on the morphology of their breasts, each woman has a different look; the increase in volume can be done through plastic surgery with implant placement or by lipofiling, if the desired increase in volume is less significant. ” illustrates Dr. Philippe Sebag. “To reduce, on the other hand, the only way will be to carry out a breast reduction surgically” concludes the specialist.
These different solutions are not neutral on the body but rather well tolerated by women’s bodies.
Remember that a physical change such as a variation in the volume of the breasts can have harmful and regrettable psychological effects in the more or less long term. The surgical act, if there is one, must therefore be taken personally, in all conscience, and not to please the desire of the spouse.
