The Ministry of Education would like to recruit soldiers for the teaching profession. The ÖH considers this project to be highly problematic and is clearly opposed to it.
Vienna (OTS) – In an attempt to compensate for the lack of teachers, more soldiers are now to be recruited as career changers. The cooperation between the education and defense ministries also prompted the anchoring of “comprehensive national defence” in the curricula from autumn. Two officers were also included in the textbook commission. “Soldiers have no place in school classes. The increased influence of the army in classes and curricula paves the way to a militarized education system.
”, criticizes Nina Mathies from the chairing team of the Austrian Students’ Union (ÖH). Instead of promoting militarization in the school system, major socially relevant topics such as the climate crisis or anti-discrimination should finally be anchored in the curricula.
Polaschek is overwhelmed by the systematic lack of teachers. Instead of solving the problems in the long term, he resorts to sham solutions and short-term treatment of the symptoms. “The teaching degree and the teaching profession must be made more attractive. It needs better working conditions, fair pay and smaller classes.
”, demands Sarah Rossmann from the ÖH chair team. A comprehensive teacher training reform that will make teacher training more accessible and studyable once more has been pending for a long time.
Educators are experts in their field who cannot simply be replaced by career changers. Instead of finally appreciating this expertise and responsibility, Polaschek is now increasingly relying on lateral entrants, making the teacher training course even less attractive. “The increased use of career changers not only massively devalues the qualifications of teachers, it also denies the importance of pedagogical skills. Pupils need competent teachers who can respond to their needs!
”, adds Simon Neuhold from the ÖH chair team. Soldiers in school classes are not the solution, but another serious problem for the Austrian school system.
