Club Brugge picked up their first victory of the season at Westerlo on Sunday’s Jupiler Pro League matchday two. The only goal of the match was scored by new Brazilian recruit Igor Thiago (36th) who is already on his second goal in as many matches in the Belgian championship.
In the first period, Sinan Bolat was strongly called upon by the Bruges offensives. The Campines goalkeeper first stopped the shot on target fromHans Vanaken (15th), before intercepting the head of the captain (27th) with a fine parade. Anthony Nusa (30th) then unleashed a curling shot that also ended up in Bolat’s arms.
As the ‘Blauw-Zwart’ grew impatient with the lack of success, Igor Thiago (0-1, 36th) finally opened the scoring with a lob on the Turkish goalkeeper.
After the break, the Campines initiated their first chance with a strike from Nicolas Madsen (48th) who did not worry Simon Mignolet. However, the scenario did not reverse. Bolat was once more put to the test, first with the recovery of Igor Thiago (51st), then with a shot on target fromAndreas Skov Olsen (65e).
At the end of the game, Westerlo did not go far from an equalizer with a solitary action fromAdedire Mebude (80th) which he concluded with a shot intercepted by the Bruges goalkeeper. In the last moments, Antonio Nusa (90 + 1st) fired a shot that ended up on the Campine crossbar.
In the standings of the Belgian first division, Club Brugge takes provisional fourth place with 4 points in two games while Westerlo is in 12th place with one unit. Union Saint-Gilloise and Gantoise share the lead with 6 points.
