Sharks Acquire Erik Karlsson in Trade with Penguins: Details and Analysis

Karlsson, winner of the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman last season with 101 points (25 goals, 76 assists), heads to Pittsburgh with forward prospect Dillon Hamaliuk and a third-round pick in the 2026 draft.

In return, the Sharks get forwards Mike Hoffman, Mikael Granlund, defenseman Jan Rutta and a conditional 2024 first-round pick.

Karlsson, 33, became the sixth defenseman in franchise history to reach 100 points in a season, the first since Brian Leetch (102) with the New York Rangers in 1991-92. He has four more seasons to go on his eight-year, $92 million contract (average annual salary $11.5 million) signed with the Sharks on June 17, 2019. Hoffman, 33, had 34 points (14 goals, 20 assists) in 67 regular season games with the Habs last season. Drafted in the fifth round (130th overall) by the Senators in 2009, he has 464 points (218 goals, 246 assists) in 679 career regular season games with the Canadiens, St. Louis Blues, Florida Panthers and the Senators. He added 20 points (11 goals, nine assists) in 33 playoff games.

Granlund, 31, had 41 points (10 goals, 31 assists) in 79 games with the Nashville Predators and Penguins last season, including five points (one goal, four assists) in 21 games following being acquired by the Penguins on March 1. Drafted ninth overall by the Minnesota Wild in 2010, Granlund has 484 points (145 goals, 339 assists) in 750 career games with the Penguins, Predators and Wild, and 32 points (11 goals, 21 assists) in 59 spring tournament games.

Rutta, 33, had nine points (three goals, six assists) in 56 games with the Penguins last season. Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Chicago Blackhawks on June 7, 2017, Rutta has 70 points (15 goals, 55 assists) in 294 career games with the Penguins, Tampa Bay Lightning and Blackhawks. He added 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in 49 playoff games, winning the Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay twice (2020, 2021).

Hamaliuk was drafted in the second round (55th) by the Sharks in 2019. He spent the last season with the Wichita Thunder of the ECHL, collecting seven points (four goals, three assists) in six games. He never played in the NHL.

Petry, 35, spent just over seven seasons with Montreal before being traded to the Penguins on July 16, 2022 in return for defender Mike Matheson, among others. In his only season in Pittsburgh, Petry had 31 points (five goals, 26 assists) in 61 games. Petry has two more seasons left on his four-year, $25 million contract (average annual salary $6.25 million) signed with the Canadiens on Sept. 25, 2020. Drafted in the second round (45th overall) by the Edmonton Oilers in 2006, Petry has 353 points (92 goals, 261 assists) in 864 career games with the Penguins, Canadiens and Oilers, and 13 points (five goals, eight assists) in 48 playoff games.

DeSmith, 31, has spent his entire career with the Penguins organization, who signed him as an undrafted free agent on July 1, 2017. Last season, DeSmith went 15-16-4 with a 3.17 goals- once morest average and a .905 save percentage. In 134 games with Pittsburgh, he was 58-44-15 with a 2.81 GAA and .912 save percentage. He also had nine shutouts.

Légaré, 22, was selected by the Penguins in the third round (74th overall) in the 2019 draft. Drafted in the third round (76th) by the Predators in 2016, Pitlick has 54 points (21 goals, 33 assists) in 123 career NHL games with the Canadiens, Wild and Predators.
