Nintendo makes its financial balance sheet: it’s a hit, Zelda TofK crushes everything

RecentlyNintendo has published a financial file representing its results for the last quarter, ended on June 30, 2023. If you ever doubted it, know that the Kyoto firm is in the green (and not just a little) thanks to the insolent success of some of its video game works… but also in the cinema!

First of all, you should know that the company has registered net revenues of 2.94 billion euros, an increase of 50% compared to the same quarter in 2022. Even better, net profit is now 1.15 billion euros, or +52%. Everything is going well, then.

Even though she is nearing the end of her cycle, the Nintendo Switch continues to sell with 3.91 million new takers (+13.9%!), inflating the total scores to 129.5 million Nintendo Switch worldwide. 52.21 million video games were also sold on the console during this quarter, an increase of 26.1%). Even more impressively, this brings the number of games sold on Switch to 1.09 billion.

If there is a title that has pulled Nintendo up (although it was already not very low), it is The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom: it’s simple, 18.51 million sales have been recorded since the game’s release, May 12, until the end of the quarter (June 30, we remind you). It is already one of the biggest successes of 2023: it remains to be seen how it will position itself once morest the scores of Hogwarts Legacy, and also the traditional Call of Duty and FIFA (well, EA Sports FC, NOW).

In another register, we also learn that the film Super Mario Bros has largely contributed to Nintendo’s income, in particular by boosting sales of video games with, for example1.67 million Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold… or 55.46 million sales in total. Not bad, for a game originally released in 2014 on Wii U.

Also according to Nintendo, the animated film has also enabled better figures in the mobile sector, promoting player engagement: Nintendo’s mobile sector thus generated 203 million euros (+190.1%).

Despite these excellent figures, However, Nintendo has not revised upwards its forecast for the entire current fiscal year, which it estimates at 9.16 billion euros in revenue. And imagine that this corresponds to… a drop of 9.5% compared to the forecasts announced in May 2023.

Finally, last thing to know and not least: the manufacturer says it wants to focus on the Switch for now.

For hardware, with our continued focus on the Nintendo Switch, we’re not only trying to put one console in every home, but several in every home, or even one for every person.

Another goal is to continually release new offers so that more consumers continue to play Nintendo Switch for even longer and that we can maximize hardware sales.

We remind you that the rumors around a new console are intensifying very seriously. Nintendo has in any case confirmed that no new machine will be released during this fiscal year, which will therefore end on March 31, 2024. After that, however, anything is possible.

End of course for the terrible plagiarism of The Last of Us on Nintendo Switch

A few weeks ago, we were telling you regarding a funny game called The Last Hope: Dead Zone Survival, released on the Nintendo Switch eShop. To tell the truth, the game is talked regarding a lot: already and above all, because it is regarding‘a rough and undisguised copy of the hit The Last of Us, which obviously belongs to Sony. From the cover to the title itself, through the context – that of a post-apo city with infected – through a male hero having to protect a young girl, absolutely nothing was hidden. No doubt even the publisher, West Connection Limited, counted entirely on it to make people talk regarding themselves.

Then, because it turns out that the software is of proven low quality, with some English-language media delivering scathing reviews, calling it “the worst game ever tested”. In short, all the lights were red for The Last Hope, which nevertheless brilliantly succeeded in its publicity stunt and undoubtedly sold more copies than it was possible without a marketing campaign.

The problem is that in front of this media buzz, Sony itself took the fly and therefore attacked the VG Games studio, behind the development. First of all, the Japanese giant managed to remove all the trailers from YouTube; followingwards, Sony Interactive Entertainment directly attacked the game, sold on the eShop. And Nintendo accepted the claim for infringement of property rights: The Last Hope was simply banned from the eShop. Nice you game.

Despite Final Fantasy XVI, Square Enix announces mixed results

Even the greats sometimes suffer from bad times. For once, Square-Enix has been experiencing a small crisis for some time, he who even parted ways with yet iconic studios and franchises from Embracer Group, which then recovered Tomb Raider or Deus Ex: very recently, the Japanese publisher has unveiled its quarterly results… and the accounts are not the most famous. We explain.

It’s simple: if video game sales represent 548 million euros in revenue (compared to 479 million euros for the same quarter in 2022), net operating profit nevertheless recorded a painful drop of… 65%, with 19 million euros between 2023, compared to 92 million euros last year. Net profits are, of them, 40 million euros this year, once morest 117 million euros in 2022.

These figures are difficult to take in, despite the good results of Final Fantasy XVI, released only eight days before the end of the quarter: the action-RPG has largely contributed to the growth in sales of boxed games from the publisher, or 2.21 million games. With the sales of dematerialized games, the score then rises to 7.54 million during the April-June quarter ( once morest 4.28 million last year).

As you can imagine, there are nevertheless sectors in decline: that of MMOs for example, with 70 million euros in turnover (compared to 90 million in 2022). The mobile sector has also run out of steam with 143 million euros in turnover, once morest 175 million euros in 2022.

Nevertheless, Square-Enix expects to achieve a better fiscal year than the previous one, with forecasts of 2.3 billion euros in turnover and a net profit of 246 million euros.s. It is recalled that the fiscal year will end on March 31, 2024 and that it must in particular see the release of major games, such as the highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
