Controversial License Plate Raises Questions: Belgium’s Surrealism and Personalized Plate Rules

Belgium, the country of surrealism? The name of the license plate chosen by this young Belgian nurse of 27 years has something to challenge more than one. This is what happened on the X network (formerly Twitter) where many Internet users had a great time following discovering the photo of this Jaguar’s license plate taken near Bruges. On it, we might read the inscription “KUT-WIJF”, which means “bitch” in Dutch.

This Saturday August 5, 2023, the Dutch-language daily Het Laatste Nieuws tells us that the motorist in question is called Élodie Maenhout (27 years old). A home nurse who explains that she ordered this personalized plate a few months ago. Mainly out of curiosity. “Normally offensive things are not allowed. So I did it to test”, explains the one who did not expect to see the DIV accept her request. “I chose everything by myself. I’ve never been married, so it’s not from an angry ex.”

“Two weeks following my application, I received notification that my application had been approved,” she says.

Except that the word inscribed on its plate is enough to shock more than one. “And that, is it authorized?”, “When we pay, we have everything”, “1,000 euros for that”, commented Internet users, sometimes mentioning Georges Gilkinet, Federal Minister for Mobility.

However, if you wish to obtain a personalized plate, rules are imposed: no political, insulting or racist connotation. Names of political parties, insults or offensive terms are prohibited.
