Valencia, Aug 6 (EFE).- The Fisabio Foundation leads the Menina project (MENtal Health and wellbeing Improvement during pregnancy), which aims to generate new knowledge regarding the mental health and well-being of women during pregnancy, involving them in the investigation.
In this way, it will be possible to delve into their unmet needs, their concerns and their feelings during pregnancy, the Generalitat has reported in a statement.
According to Fisabio’s R&D manager, Paula Pastor, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 25% of pregnant women suffer some type of significant psychological discomfort and that one in five will experience some type of of mood or anxiety disorder during pregnancy and postpartum.
For this reason, the Menina project will promote psychosocial well-being and the prevention of mental disorders in mothers during pregnancy.
Twelve pregnant women, between weeks 12 and 20 of gestation, will participate as “citizen scientists” in the qualitative research through interviews and sharing with them the results of the analysis phase.
These women will form part of the collaborative and participatory process together with the heads of the Mental Health Service and the Gynecology and Obstetrics Service of the General University Hospital of Elda, doctors Olga Brotons and María José García, respectively, as well as the rest of the health professionals. of these services.
The coordination of this project, which began on June 15 and will end on December 15, will fall to the Fisabio management team made up of Patricia Martínez, R&D project manager and head of the Open Science Unit; Paula Pastor, manager of R+D+i and Citizen Participation, and Silvia Fajardo, manager of R+D Projects at Fisabio.
Patricia Martínez has assured that with the implementation of the project they intend to develop new solutions to prevent and improve the mental health and well-being of pregnant women, as well as create greater awareness and involvement of health personnel and families in the process.
The Menina project has been selected to join the “Accelerator Programme” of the European initiative “Impetus for Citizen Science”, which is financed by the Horizon Europe programme.
In addition, it has been created within the Citizen Science strategy of the Fisabio Foundation to encourage active citizen participation in scientific research, contributing to co-creation and collaborative processes with the entire health field.
“Impetus” promotes citizen science projects through different open calls. In the first, it received 215 proposals, among which was the Menina project, which was finally selected along with 34 other projects from all over Europe.
Menina’s financing amounts to 20,000 euros to carry out the project over the next six months. The Impetus acceleration program is completed with a mentoring and training plan in citizen and participatory science that each project will receive.
The project contemplates the incorporation of different population samples and case studies. In addition, the team that is part of Menina hopes to successfully introduce the solutions obtained into clinical practice, replicating them throughout the healthcare field.
On the other hand, work will continue to obtain an adequate methodology that serves to expand citizen science processes as a transversal strategy in research. EFE
