Sleeping under the Stars in Belgium: Bivouac Areas, Rules, and Tips

A forest ranger from Chimay nevertheless clearly explained to us that there was a rule to follow for sleeping under the stars: “In Belgium, it is forbidden to camp in nature… except where it is authorised.

In other words, legally, you can only sleep in a campsite or on a bivouac area, and nowhere else. And with regard to the bivouac areas, a certain conduct is required: “It’s a transit area, you can only stay there for one night, explains forest ranger Thomas Puissant. Ideally, by 10 a.m., everyone should have left the bivouac. It must be in immaculate condition, as if no one had stopped there.

To bivouac is therefore to arrive and leave neither seen nor known. And it’s not that easy in terms of meals or toilets, especially since the areas generally don’t have any water or sanitary facilities. “You have to respect the place, says Thomas Puissant. Nature welcomes us here, not the other way around.

Leave no trace. It is an effort, but also a peculiarity of this mode of travel. No waste, no CO2, no pollution. Obviously, this little journey requires a little preparation. But what trip doesn’t require it, following all?

And if you’re really not in the mood to pedal, we can also take you on a night train or a van!
