With Suno, there is no need to have any knowledge of music or song styles. From a simple text, this app generates a song!

When it comes to artificial intelligence, music is a bit of the poor relation. Several apps have emerged and we have reviewed the main ones in this comparison: 10 generative AI apps for creating music. What came out is that, for the time being, most publishers seem to be following a solo path, without a constant appearing yet.

Suno participates in such an approach. The bias of this start-up is to pose that, first, a user is not supposed to have the slightest knowledge of music, not even to know how to distinguish a hip-hop piece from another falling within the current r’n’b or techno. After all why not ? A large number of individuals “consume” music for pure pleasure without any attempt to know what style it is, even less to know the artist who is at the origin of the work.

So with suno.ai, all that is required is to provide some text. Even better, if we lack inspiration, Suno offers us to delegate the task to ChatGPT which will produce the desired lyrics. We thus carried out an unpretentious test with the mention “ love song », leaving ChatGPT to create a text. Here’s what we got: vocals, a melody, an orchestration!

Suno deduces the musical style from the text

As we can see, Suno generated a ballad on the simple analysis of the text. According to what is provided to him, he will produce a rap, a rock’n’roll song, country music and everyone. The operation is performed via Suno’s Discord forum — like Midjourney — from a simple command: /chirp (an English word for “chirp”).

For each text that we submit to him, Suno produces two examples of songs, it’s up to us to choose the one we prefer, or to keep both.

Suno’s limits

You will undoubtedly agree: Suno surprises with the way he “constructs” his songs by developing verses, skilfully repeated phrases, etc. However, there are two points where Suno might benefit from improvement. First of all, he can’t sing well in French — the text is enunciated with an American accent which makes it incomprehensible. It must therefore be nourished by the text in the language of Shakespeare. Moreover, as you will be able to see through the examples on this page, the voices lack a lot of clarity and this is a point that needs to be improved.

If you lack inspiration, you can test Suno with the text of an existing song. Here, Lucy in the sky with diamonds by John Lennon & Paul McCartney. This song is offered as a demonstration on the Suno website page. © suno.ai

In the meantime, for the next invitation you receive, why not offer your host a little piece made around his first name? Thrill on the horizon…
