Giving blood in France is relatively simple. Once the appointment has been made at a bank of the French Blood Establishment (EFS), you must answer a questionnaire of around fifty questions, then meet a doctor or nurse who will give his consent or not for the sample to be taken. . The blood test itself lasts regarding ten minutes and is followed by a snack and a half-hour observation period.
Blood must be donated throughout the year because blood products, once collected, have a limited shelf life. For example, packed red blood cells can be kept for 42 days, while platelets can only be kept for seven days.
The referring doctor at the EFS in Île-de-France, Michèle Villemur, tells 20 Minutes TV that “1,700 donations per day must be collected to meet the needs of the sick” in the region. “Come give, it’s very important. Patients need it,” she concludes.
