Los Angeles Public Employee Walkout: Labor Law Violations and Union Actions in Southern California

Bloomberg — Los Angeles public employees, citing “repeated labor law violations,” said they will stop work for 24 hours Tuesday, joining walkouts across the city by Hollywood screenwriters and hospitality workers.

SEIU Local 721, which represents more than 95,000 workers throughout Southern California, including sanitation and water treatment workers, did not immediately respond to a request for further comment.

“City workers are vital to running services for millions of Angelenos every day and to our local economy,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement. “They deserve fair contracts and we have been negotiating in good faith with SEIU 721 since January.”

Southern California has been the center of union action in recent months. Dockers reached a tentative agreement at all 29 West Coast ports earlier this year, following a victory for Los Angeles school district employees. Meanwhile, the Writers Guild of America’s bargaining committee told its members late Friday that it remains willing to “resume negotiations in good faith to reach a fair deal for all writers.”

Hundreds of members of Unite Here Local 11, a union that represents more than 30,000 hospitality workers in Southern California and Arizona, rallied Saturday to protest pay disparities as visitors from the Eras Tour by Taylor Swift. More than 50 elected officials signed a letter asking Swift to postpone her concerts in Los Angeles in solidarity with hospitality workers.
