The holidays of the family from Wommelgem, in the province of Antwerp, changed in a few seconds this Friday followingnoon. While riding a quad with her 3-year-old brother, the 13-year-old lost control of her vehicle and slammed into a wall at full speed.
“She had experience in driving the quad, she was practically born with it and she often did it on vacation”, confides a friend of the family to the Nieuwsblad. According to him, she would have taken a road that she did not know and which “slope steeply”. “Their father was following them but unfortunately he might not prevent the accident”, adds the friend with our colleagues.
Both children were rushed to the nearest hospital and died of their injuries. They were buried on Saturday followingnoon.
The police have opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the tragedy.
According to our Flemish colleagues, the Belgian-Turkish family had its roots in the small village of Yenikapi, regarding two hours by road from Ankara. She used to spend her summer holidays there.
