For the Saemangeum Jamboree participants who were tired from the heatwave, the religious world and companies rolled up their sleeves. When teenage participants from abroad suffered from heat waves and insect bites, and some participating countries decided to withdraw from the campsite, the private sector started to provide support.

On the 5th, the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism decided to open some 170 temples and provide them as campgrounds or lodgings to help Saemangeum World Scout Jamboree participants suffering from the heat wave.

The Jogye Order announced on the 5th that “in connection with the 2023 Saemangeum 25th World Scout Jamboree, emergency support instructions were sent to temples nationwide at 15:00 on the 5th.” The Jogye Order sent instructions to 24 parish headquarters across the country, 147 temples that operate temple stays, and the Korean Cultural Training Center (Gongju, South Chungcheong Province) under direct management of the Jogye Order to provide campsites or lodging upon request from participating countries. The Jogye Order said, “We are currently figuring out the capacity of each temple, and through close consultation with the Organizing Committee of the World Scout Jamboree, we will provide opportunities for young people around the world to safely experience and understand Korea.”

During this Jamboree, regarding 9,000 participants in the Jamboree, including Geumsansa Temple in Gimje (regarding 2,500 people) in Jeonbuk, Seonunsa Temple in Gochang (regarding 4,500 people), and Naesosa Temple in Buan (regarding 1900 people), among the temples of the Jogye Order, are conducting experiential activities outside the site.

The Jogye Order sent an emergency guideline on this day to help Jamboree participants experience Korean traditional culture, history, and nature by providing the Jogye Order’s infrastructure and know-how amidst countries withdrawing due to heat waves. The Jogye Order has been running temple stays for more than 20 years since the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup. The Jogye Order said, “By making the most of the know-how of communicating with people around the world through temple stays for over 20 years, youths from all over the world can experience Korea’s traditional culture and enjoy Korea’s ecology and culture in a variety of ways within the thousand-year-old forest cultivated by traditional temples. We will provide various opportunities,” he said.
