Perfection is no longer in the Canadian Football League this season.
The Toronto Argonauts mightn’t get over the loss of their starting quarterback and suffered their first loss of the season on Friday night, 20-7 once morest the Calgary Stampeders.
The Argos still lead the Eastern Conference with a 6-1 record. The Montreal Alouettes follow at 3-3. They will be in action Saturday at 7 p.m. (RDS) once morest the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Calgary, for its part, signs a third victory in its eighth game of the campaign. They are fourth on the West side.
Argonauts quarterback Chad Kelly injured his ankle in the second quarter. Head coach Ryan Dinwiddie suggested his quarterback was available on the sidelines for the end of the game, but preferred to keep him out due to injury.
Before leaving, Kelly still had time to throw a touchdown pass to Cam Philips who crossed the end zone following 76 yards. The score was then 7-7 at this time.
The Stampeders dealt a heavy blow to the Argonauts just before returning to the locker room for the half. Javon Leake fumbled the ball on a punt and it bounced into his Toronto end zone. Michael Griffin recovered for Calgary and scored the touchdown that gave his team a 10-point lead.
The Argos offense didn’t orchestrate anything in the second half with Cameron Duke behind the center in place of Kelly.
During his time on the field, Kelly completed four passes on six attempts for 96 yards. For his part, Dukes had eight passes on 15 attempts for 63 yards and one interception.
The Stampeders rushed for 168 yards, including 137 on 27 carries from Dedrick Mills once morest the Argonauts defense, which ranked second in the CFL in rushing yards.
Stampeders quarterback Jake Meier had a strong game with 22 completions on 24 attempts for 149 yards and no interceptions.
The Stamps return to action on August 12 once morest the BC Lions while Toronto hosts the Ottawa Redblacks the following day.
