Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Saudi Arabia is preparing to host peace talks on Ukraine in Jeddah, on Saturday, which will include the United States in addition to a number of Western and developing countries.

US officials said they would aim to develop common principles for ending the war and discuss what kind of military aid Kiev would need to deter Russia from attacking Ukraine once more.

The officials added that while Russia will not be present during the talks, the issue of what Russian President Vladimir Putin would like to see such as a cease-fire or a peace deal, and whether he will stick to that, will be our top priority.

Although the idea of peace negotiations at this point in the war seems premature, U.S. officials believe that multiple factors might influence how Putin stays on the battlefield, including pressure from southern countries.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the talks will take place on Saturday in Jeddah and are scheduled to last for one day only, a senior Saudi government official told CNN.

Who will attend?

US officials said on Tuesday that US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan will be present on behalf of the United States.

And the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced, on Friday, that a representative of its country would also attend, and Ukraine mentioned that other major developing countries, such as India and Brazil, would also attend.

The talks are the second in a series of meetings organized by Ukrainian President Andriy Yermak’s chief of staff. The first took place earlier this year in Copenhagen.
