ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates, Aug. 04, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) has established two new departments and four associated graduate programs dedicated to robotics and computer science, satisfying the growing global demand for these disciplines, which are expected to reach, respectively, USD 225 billioni and USD 140 billion by 2030ii.

The new departments complement the university’s current computer vision (CV), machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP) departments, which are ranked in the top 20 globally by CSRankings.

In parallel with the formation of new departments, the university launched master’s and doctoral programs in robotics and computer science. These programs will help develop the UAE’s broader AI ecosystem and strengthen its position as an international center for AI research and innovation.

MBZUAI President and University Professor Eric Xing said, “The addition of these two new departments represents MBZUAI’s enduring effort to develop a solid foundation for research excellence and innovation in the field of artificial intelligence. The university will continue to attract world-renowned faculty and researchers in these fields to Abu Dhabi and prepare students to become pioneers with highly sought-following skills in the development of advanced AI tools and applications across industries. Given the digital AI renaissance we find ourselves in, the demand for skills in these disciplines is on the rise.”

The Robotics Department will focus on rigorous, original and high-impact research, emphasizing learning and robot algorithms rather than developing new robot hardware. The Informatics Department will provide unparalleled technical depth into the fundamental technologies that have given rise to the phenomenal growth and impact of IT over the past four decades.

Acting Dean of MBZUAI, Professor Timothy Baldwin, said: “MBZUAI is at the forefront of AI education and research, making our programs distinctive and globally competitive. The Robotics Department will focus on autonomous and human-centered robotics research, as well as the development of the next generation of robotics professionals with deep skills in AI and robotics, supporting careers at the forefront of academia, industry and of public administration”.

Robotics is a transformative technology, revolutionizing sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture and transport. Research indicates a strong demand for robotics expertise in the coming years, with the market for robotics technology expected to exceed $225.6 billion in value by 2030iii. This demand will be severely hampered by a foreseeable shortage of talent worldwide, with a potential of 85 million jobs to be filled by 2030 due to the lack of qualified people to fill themiv. Likewise, the global computer science job market is also expanding, with projections of an annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.5% between 2021 and 2027 and an estimated 3.5 million jobs by 2026v.

Applications for the 2024 intake year will open on September 1, 2023. For more information, visit mbzuai.ac.ae or contact [email protected]
