One person was killed and nine others, including children, were injured following a driver seen the wrong way collided with two cars on the Capital Beltway in Montgomery County Tuesday night, authorities said.
Officers received multiple calls regarding a Mercedes SUV going the wrong way on Interstate 270 just before midnight, according to a statement from the Maryland State Police.
The Mercedes driver headed from I-270 near Rockledge Drive to the I-495 Outer Loop and collided with a Lexus and a Nissan Pathfinder on I-495 at Maryland Route 355. The driver then drove away from the accident, according to police.
The driver of the Nissan was taken to a hospital, where she died. Her identity was not immediately released.
Paramedics took nine other people to hospitals. Nothing was yet known regarding their conditions. Police said another adult and three children inside the Nissan were injured.
Shortly following the accident, police arrested a 23-year-old from Macon, Georgia. The driver was taken to the Rockville Police Station while charges are pending.
The outer lane of I-495 at Connecticut Avenue was closed for hours and reopened early Wednesday morning.
The investigation is ongoing.
