The 15-meter giant will sail through the city center for the first time this weekend

The St. Petersburg team of science popularizers “Energy +” has created the world’s largest supboard. A giant inflatable SUP board will go on its maiden voyage on August 5 at the Fontanka SUP international festival. For the official registration of this event, experts from the Russian Book of Records will arrive in the Northern capital, according to the online magazine Energia+.

The length of the sap-record holder reaches 15.4 meters, which is comparable in height to a five-story building. The board is almost a meter larger than the previous achievement from Guinness Book of Recordsinstalled by enthusiasts from Spain in 2016.

The Energia+ team dedicated its record to all the people who are the driving force behind progress: pioneer scientists, engineers who make the impossible possible, as well as athletes and lovers of a healthy lifestyle.

This weekend, a giant sapboard will lead the water procession at the river carnival in St. Petersburg, which is attended by 10,000 sapsurfers. The length of the swim is almost 9 km along the Moika and Fontanka rivers and the Kryukov Canal. Participants of the festival will sail along the city embankments in the historical center of the city under the arches of 30 bridges.

In order for the sap-record holder to confidently pass the entire Fontanka SUP track, he will be managed by a team of 22 surfers: among them sap marathon runner Roman Gorokhovsky, Olympic medalist in rhythmic gymnastics Angelina Shkatova, St. Petersburg scientists and popularizers of science from the online magazine Energia + “.

Sergey Mysovsky, a three-time Russian SUP champion and professional waterman, took part in the tests of the 15-meter board before its first swim.

“It was super unusual, super cool. Sap is very stable, very stable. The board is quite slow if rowed alone, but when there is a team of twenty people on it, no problems at all: it quickly turns around, goes straight and back, spins, spins. Gorgeous! We have not tested this SUP in waves yet, but I would love to try it. For example, to ride from Zelenogorsk towards St. Petersburg with a large team along the waves and with the wind would be a very cool idea, ”Sergey Mysovsky shared his first impressions.

«Fontanka SUP” is an international SUP festival, which this year will be held in St. Petersburg for the 8th time.
