“Although these attacks are rare, otters may seek to protect their young, their space and their food”, underline the authorities of the American state of Montana, recommending to the public to stay away from these animals.

While an aggressive otter continues to stalk surfers in California in July, another otter injured three vacationers in the northwestern United States this week, including one seriously, reports the local authorities.

The three victims, who were leisurely descending the Jefferson River in the state of Montana on buoys, were attacked by a river otter on Wednesday evening. “Around 8:30 p.m. the three women saw one or two otters. One approached and attacked them, ”indicate the authorities responsible for natural areas in Montana.

“The three women were injured”, and “one of them, whose injuries were more serious, was airlifted to a hospital.”

“They may seek to protect their young”

Although perceived as cute, with its small head protruding from the water and its small nimble legs, the wild animal is no less dangerous, say the authorities. “Although these attacks are rare, otters may seek to protect their young, their space and their food,” they point out, recommending that the public keep their distance from these animals.

But in the event of an otter attack, “fight”, and flee as soon as you can on dry land, advise the authorities all the same.

In mid-July, a 5-year-old sea otter made headlines in the American press following attacking several surfers in Santa Cruz, not far from San Francisco, to steal their precious board. A video of the animal, filmed daringly climbing on a board, under the frightened gaze of a gliding enthusiast and ending up chewing the foam object, went around social networks.
