So far, Iga Świątek has played in Canada twice and dropped out of the tournament at an early stage twice. This year, he will make his debut on the courts in Montreal.

The world can disenchant Canada

Montreal alternates between the WTA and ATP tournaments and trades them with Toronto. So far, Świątek has played only in the latter city, and without much success.

In 2019, the Polish woman had to pass the qualifications. In the tournament itself, she defeated Alja Tomljanović and Caroline Wozniacki, but in the 1/8 finals she had to recognize the superiority of Naomi Osaka, the then leader of the ranking. In 2022, she started in the second round, where she turned out to be better than Tomljanovic, but once more she was eliminated from the tournament at the round of 16 stage. She unexpectedly lost to the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia.

The Polish tennis player will make her debut on the courts in Montreal, where Hubert Hurkacz has recently done very well. A year ago, the Wrocław native reached the final of the ATP 1000 tournament.

Świątek can be calm regarding the position of the leader in the WTA ranking until the US Open. He will not defend any points until the Grand Slam event in New York. She feels in good shape, and the last victory in Warsaw was a valuable experience for her.

– I did not hide and will not hide that this tournament was important and difficult for me for many reasons. And that’s why I’m so proud. I read somewhere that this tournament is invalid to those ahead of me in Canada and the US. Well … it was very important to me and I’m glad that I felt so much support and positive energy from you – announced Świątek in social media following the triumph in Warsaw, addressing the fans.

The list of registered players for the WTA 1000 tournament includes almost all players from the top of the WTA ranking. There will be no Ons Jabeur and Barbora Krejcikova. The Tunisian and the Czech were excluded from participation due to injuries. There will be two titled tennis players who were successful years ago – Carolina Wozniacki, who resumed her career, as well as the legendary Venus Williams. Both will play in Montreal thanks to receiving “wild cards”.

The WTA 1000 tournament in Montreal will take place from August 7-13. The event bracket has not been drawn yet.
