Barbada de Barbades: Overcoming Adversity and Thriving in the Quebec Drag Community

Targeted by a protest movement last April, Barbada de Barbades does not hide having been “worried” for the Quebec drag community. But she was never afraid of her detractors. “If we are scared, we let them win. And there is no way that will happen, ”she pleads.

“When you’re scared, you don’t think rationally. You have to keep a cool head, in a way, ”continues the drag queen.

Barbara de Barbades’ spring has not been easy. Her story hour – an activity she has been doing since 2016 – was taken aback by critics objecting to a drag queen reading a story to an elementary-aged audience in a Montérégie library.

She admits, she was not surprised by this rise in anger towards a so-called marginalized art form.

“It’s not the first time in my life that someone has disagreed with what I do or even who I am. I’ve been a drag queen for 18 years; I have seen others. But if it had happened following a year or two of career, it would certainly have destabilized me, ”says Barbada from Barbados.

The drag queen has since chosen to use only her stage name to promote her profession, just to separate the public persona from her personal identity.

busier than ever

The protests of his detractors, however, did not have the desired effect. On the contrary, Barbados’ schedule in Barbados is busier than ever.

After having presented her story hour four times this summer as part of the Just for Laughs festival, the drag queen is working on various projects – both stage and television – which should be unveiled soon.

It will also join forces with the Orchester métropolitain for three musical editions of its story hour, scheduled for next November, April and June. Its reading will be accompanied for the occasion by a soundtrack created to measure and played on stage by members of the orchestra.

In short, no, Barbada de Barbades has no intention of hiding, or keeping quiet, or lowering its head.

“I am living proof that hate does not work,” she concludes.

♦ Barbados of Barbados will host the National Pride Party tonight. She will also be behind the decks on Wednesday evening to warm up the Olympic Stadium esplanade before the show. Immix.
