Spraying your skin with beer does not in any way guarantee a better tan and is certainly not a substitute for sunscreen to protect yourself from UV rays.

New idea circulating on TikTok, beer tanning, or beer tanning in French, is dangerous for your health. As its name suggests, this trend consists of applying this alcoholic drink to the skin before exposing yourself to the sun, in order to quickly obtain a tanned complexion.

The hashtag “beertan” has been viewed more than 215,000 times on the social network. For a user who has tried the technique: it is the “best tan ever”.

No UV protection

For promoters of beer tanning, hops and the sugars present in beer would activate melanin and therefore promote tanning. “They also believe it provides additional benefits due to the presence of antioxidants and vitamins in certain types of beer,” skin specialist Caroline Brooks told PA Media.

But be careful, danger. The layer of beer on the skin does not offer any protection once morest the sun’s rays, which are very dangerous for our health in the event of long exposure.

Carcinogenic risk

“UV radiation is a known carcinogen and a major factor in skin deterioration, which can manifest itself in sunburn, premature aging and an increased risk of skin cancer, including melanoma”, details with of The Independent Dr. Maham Khan, dermatologist.

According to data from the National Cancer Institute, in France the number of new cases of skin cancer more than tripled between 1990 and 2023.

All skin types, even those that are not prone to sunburn, should be protected. “Always put the health and well-being of your skin first when considering a beauty or tanning trend,” adds Caroline Brooks.

In addition, beer can attract insects, including mosquitoes, wasps or bees and therefore splashing it on the skin increases the risk of bites.
