Beirut – The head of the Islamic State, Abu Hussein al-Husseini al-Qureshi, has been killed. In an official IS statement, Abu Hussein al-Qureshi was killed in direct clashes with the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group in rebel-held northwest Syria’s Idlib province. But it is not clear when he was killed.

The spokesman also informed that Abu Hafs Al-Hashimi Al-Qureshi was chosen as the new head. Abu Hafs al-Qureshi is the fifth leader of ISIS. The IS spokesperson made the announcement in a video message recorded on Telegram app channels.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said in April that Abu Hussein al-Husseini al-Qureshi had been killed by Turkish intelligence. But this was rejected by IS. In November last year, IS announced that its former leader, Abu Hassan al-Hashimi al-Qureshi, had been killed. His predecessor, Abu Ibrahim Al Qureshi, was killed in a US attack in Idlib province in February last year. In October 2019, the first leader of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was killed in Idlib.
