Overcrowding Dilemma: Municipality of Ixelles Tackles Shared Mobility Solutions

2023-08-03 11:02:59

The Municipality of Ixelles seems to be a victim of its own success. The municipal authorities say they are aware of the problem and determined to react.

Since July 7, a test phase with “drop zones” every 200 meters has been set up in the municipality of Ixelles. With advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages ? Almost no scooters hang out elsewhere now, according to the Commune. The places to park them are respected.

But all is not rosy. Spaces reserved for shared bicycles and scooters are overcrowded in many places. Examples : Porte de Namur, rue Stassart, Flagey, in front of the theatre, etc. This can annoy users who then find themselves blocked when leaving their vehicle. Indeed, the applications no longer allow them to park outside these areas. During this time, the meter is running, de facto extending the amount of the bill.

contacted by phone, Yves Rouyetalderman for mobility in Ixelles, understands the concerns and ensures that solutions are taken in a very short time.

We have created around a hundred ‘drop zones’ on municipal roads. And yes, we have sometimes been very surprised, either by great success, with overflowing ‘drop zones’, or by little success. Following that, what we’re doing all this summer are adjustments. If it overflows, we widen the area. In addition, in certain places faced with a pile of scooters, such as at the entrance to the theater, we will no doubt remove the ‘drop zone’ and create 2 or 3 smaller ones around. We make adjustments on a case-by-case basis and assess the situation almost daily.“.
