The boat was the only possible solution corresponding to the specifications of Paris 2024, i.e. accommodation less than 45 minutes from the competition venues.
The surfers who will compete in the Olympic Games in 2024 on the wave of Teahupo’o, in Tahiti, will be accommodated on the Aranui, a Polynesian cruise ship, announced Wednesday to AFP Nahema Temarii, Minister of Youth and Sports. of this overseas community.
This mixed freighter, specializing in cruises and the transport of maritime freight to the Marquesas Islands, will anchor in the bay of Vairao, close to the wave of Teahupo’o, on the peninsula of Tahiti. It will act as an Olympic village for the sports delegations, who may however choose another place of accommodation at their own expense.
A hotel near Teahupo’o, closed for 26 years, had been considered as the first option, but the repair work might not be carried out in time. According to Ms. Temarii, the boat was the only possible accommodation less than 45 minutes from the competition site, as required by the Paris-2024 specifications. The organizing committee (Cojo) “commissioned an impact study” et “provides for actions to balance a possible carbon footprint”, the minister told AFP.
We have also contracted 380 beds with residents for accredited members: media, federation, staff, judges, officials.
Barbara Martins-Nio, head of the Tahiti site for the Cojo.
Twenty-four surfers and twenty-four surfers, from 18 to 20 countries, are expected to compete in these events from July 27 to 30, 2024. They may continue until August 5, depending on the swell. Two Polynesian surfers, Vahine Fierro and Kauli Vaast, accustomed to confronting the demanding local wave, will defend the French chances alongside the Reunionese Johanne Defay.
To respect the way of life close to nature of the inhabitants of Teahupo’o, the organizers aim to develop the Tahitian peninsula without disfiguring it. “We are redoing a pedestrian bridge, renovating the Teahupo’o marina, sanitation, drinking water supply and fiber optics”, said Ms. Martins-Nio.
A new aluminum judges’ tower is under construction. It will be installed facing the wave, in place of the current wooden tower, at a cost of 4.6 million euros.
