Faced with growing difficulties in finding a dental surgeon or simply for the sake of economy, more and more French people are tempted by dental care practices offered on social networks or the web. The French Union for Oral Health (UFSBD) is concerned regarding these abuses and warns regarding the risks to oral health in a press release dated July 11, 2023. Explanations.
Dental practices and care, object of advertisements on the web
On the web or social networks, certain dental care practices are offered or encouraged, most commonly in connection with advertisements to sell dental care products. But these practices can be dangerous for the UFSBD. Most often, the practices concerned have an aesthetic objective, such as teeth whitening or teeth alignment. Some practices even aim to place dental prostheses on perfectly healthy teeth, solely with the aim of achieving an aesthetic ideal.
But the health risks can be significant, because these practices involve the use of techniques that are normally reserved for dental surgeons and/or orthodontists. The UFSBD deplores in particular:
- Unnecessary dental mutilations (filing of teeth, cutting of teeth);
- Non-professional orthodontic treatments;
- The use of lightening or bleaching products that do not comply with the regulations in force.
Real health risks!
All dental treatments and care require a thorough evaluation, regular dental follow-up and personalized adjustments, which only qualified professionals can carry out. The UFSBD warns of the health risks, which must prevail over the attractiveness of the prices advanced by the offers present on the web and disseminated by social networks. In addition, oral health professionals can choose the least invasive treatments and preserve the health of teeth and mouth in the long term.
The alert also covers the dental whitening products sold on the Internet. Some of these products do not comply with the regulations in force in France, in terms of composition, with possibly prohibited ingredients found in these products. Again, only a dental surgeon is authorized to assess the need to use a dental whitening procedure, to choose the product that complies with the regulations that is most suitable for the patient’s case and to determine the protocol to be followed.
For the teeth, you must consult the dental surgeon
Dental care can have a significant impact on oral health, but also on overall health. The risk of infection, for example, must always be taken into account, and oral infections can spread in the body, with sometimes serious consequences, especially in fragile people. It is therefore essential to carry out all the care in oral health professionals, dental surgeons and orthodontists.
Advertisements for dental care or whitening products on the web or social networks can endanger health. A phenomenon that also concerns other areas of health, such as food supplements or even certain drugs sold directly on the internet. Vigilance must be required to preserve your teeth, mouth and health!
