An operation led by the Spanish National Police has allowed arrest this monday to one dozen people traveling aboard a fishing boat with drugs. It happened on the west African coast, in waters close to Cape Verde. The police had the support of the Customs Surveillance Service, with infrastructure for this type of operation. The Petrel I ship, one of the largest available to this body, arrived in Vigo in the last few hours loaded with drugs It is estimated that it has been possible to recover at least half a ton of coca.

It was not easy. According to the sources consulted, as soon as the crew of the fishing boat detected that Customs Surveillance was going following them to board them opened several leaks in the ship with the aim of sinking it. It is common in this type of operation, since although there is a comprehensive and documented prior surveillance process, if there is no drug, the possibilities of the operation ending in a prison sentence are complicated.

Even so, Customs members managed to salvage around 15 bales of cocaine from the water. It is suspected that the ship actually had much more drugs on board. The crew members put their lives at risk to escape police pressure. The dozen that were part of the squad ended up in custody.

All these crew members who will have to give a statement to the National Police They are foreigners except one, who apparently is Galician. It has not yet been revealed if the organization had logistical support on land in Galicia, and if there will be detainees on land who can be linked to the seizure in African waters. The operation led by the Central Narcotics Brigade (Udyco) of the National Police with the help of Customs Surveillance has been possible thanks to international collaboration with other police forces.
