The professor of Psychiatry and his team will leave the deanship next September
It has been the visible face of the first criticized, and later longed for and presumed Faculty of Medicine. Miquel Roca (Palma, 1953) will leave the first line of the deanery on September 11. Although the also professor of Psychiatry at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) will continue in teaching and research and lends a hand to the team that relieves them, which will be headed by the microbiologist Toni Bennàssar.
It started in 2018, was it already your turn?
—At the beginning our commitment was that we would be there until the end of the first promotion, but at the request of the rector, both the vice deans Margarita Gili and Catalina Picó as well as the academic secretary, Francesca Garcias and I continued for another year. This is very tiring —she laughs— and we’ve already been a bit more than it touches. It’s okay to know how to leave things and someone new comes along. Managing all this has not been easy. But we are equally committed to helping those who enter.
Will there be no voting to choose the new team?
—The Faculty board is still being set up, so the new dean is directly appointed by the rector. It does not enter the electoral process because it is being constituted.
Do you have a good taste in your mouth from your time at the deanery?
—Of course, we have seen two promotions leave, 120 doctors. We leave delighted and happy. In each course we have faced something new, from the most basic science to the most clinical. In addition, we have been in constant contact with the health system and the relationship with them has been impeccable.
And with the UIB?
—Through the UIB, new doctors have been incorporated as associates, we have had three or four people for each position. This has increased research, many PhDs have been completed, there have been synergies with the IdiSBa, we have launched a simulation center that, in addition to students, has also been used for residents and to provide ongoing training to different grades. .. It was also very interesting to start the dissection room.
Have they been well funded?
—A good budget has been received, it has not been exhausted by far, mainly because we have started the accreditation of the teaching staff and it is very hard. The stabilization of tenured professors and university professors is something that we have to do progressively and solidly, although associates will continue to be essential.
Any pending account?
—The internships are compulsorily done in all the hospitals so that they get to know the entire health system. We have just involved Son Llàtzer, Inca and Manacor and now we will inaugurate
Can Misses and Eivissa Primary Care. In the future the idea is to extend to Menorca, because it is the faculty of all the Islands.
Will he now disassociate himself from the direction?
—Since it is so complex, they have asked us to lend a hand with the Structured Objective Clinical Assessment (OSCE) tests, which take place in the last year, in which students face different clinical situations. And we are committed to helping.
Do you assess these years?
—They have been intense but very happy. We have set up an infrastructure that in 50 or 100 years will continue to produce doctors. We have gone from discussing before if it was necessary and now they ask us to increase the number of places, that there are already 9 more for next year. You have to look forward.
