Terrifying Snake Bite Incident in Croatia: 6-Year-Old Boy’s Near-Death Experience

Originally from Deinze, in the province of East Flanders, Thibaut had the fear of his life during his vacation in Croatia. The 6-year-old child was bitten by a snake.

For the third day of their vacation in Croatia, Thibaut’s parents decide to take him and his sister to the Paklenica National Park, one of the most touristic mountainous areas in the country. On the edge of a river, the 6-year-old boy bends down to pick up a branch from the surface of the water when he is bitten in the hand by an ammodyte viper. It is one of the most venomous snakes in Europe.

“He cried out in pain”explains Alexander, his father. “We took a photo of the animal and went to first aid. After a half-hour walk, we arrived at the medical station. I showed the picture of the snake to one of the rescue workers. He said, ‘It’ll be fine, we’ll help you’, but I saw the worry on his face.”continues the 35-year-old man.

An hour following the bite, Thibaut was taken to hospital in Zadar, regarding 50 kilometers from the scene of the accident. “You might see how the poison was working its way through his body. In the park, only Thibaut’s hand was swollen, but in the hospital, his whole arm was already affected. He was pale and thicker than normal. Doctors said they would do everything they might to cure him, but he might not make it. It was like an electroshock for us”recalls Alexander. “If the venom had reached his chest, and therefore his heart, it would have been fatal. »

Tuesday evening, the little boy finally returned, safe and sound, with his family on Belgian soil. “We now rely on the care of UZ Gent”says Alexander, the boy’s dad. “Thibaut will stay there at least until the end of the week. »
