The Great American Carrier J.B. Hunt has decided to entrust Nikola Corporation part of the electrification of its fleet, by ordering 13 class 8 zero emission units. Ten of these electric trucks will be powered by batteries and three by hydrogen fuel cells.
Nick Hobbs, chief operating officer and president of contract services at JB Hunt, said the move demonstrates the firm’s desire to be at the forefront of innovative technologies that have the potential to transform the way goods are transported.

“These zero-emission trucks from Nikola take us even further towards our ambitious goal of reducing carbon emissions intensity through viable solutions,” adds Hobbs.
The first trucks are due for delivery in August 2023. Nikola’s electric vehicles will be used in the major areas of Los Angeles, California and Phoenix, Arizona, among others. Nikola’s HYLA subsidiary will supply the carrier with hydrogen as well as the refueling infrastructure.
Nikola CEO Michael Lohscheller said he was thrilled with the order. “The acquisition and use of these zero-emission trucks is a recognition of the hard work of our engineering, development and manufacturing teams, who have created a range of highly advanced trucks, as well as our infrastructure solutions in HYLA hydrogen, which are designed to benefit companies such as JB Hunt,” he said.
In November 2022, JB Hunt set a target to reduce its carbon emissions intensity by 32% by 2034, compared to its 2019 levels. The company was one of the first to pass an order for a zero-emission electric truck in 2017.
