Justin Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Grégoire, announced Wednesday that they have decided to separate following 18 years of marriage. The couple communicated their decision through their respective Instagram accounts.
Shortly following the announcement, Canada’s Prime Minister’s Office released a statement saying the two “have signed a separation agreement” to ensure they took “all legal and ethical steps with respect to their decision.”
The message published by the Canadian president on Instagram indicates that “following many deep and difficult conversations” the couple decided to separate.
“As always, we remain a close family with a deep love and respect for each other and for all that we have done and will continue to do. For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our privacy. Thank you,” the message concluded.
Sophie Grégoire published the same text on her account but in French.

Last April, the Canadian Prime Minister posted an emotional message on his social networks on the occasion of Sophie’s birthday: “Happy birthday, Sophie. There is no one I would rather have by my side… I love you, mon amour”.
Trudeau and Grégoire’s is the first by a sitting prime minister since his own parents’ in 1977. In his memoirs, he spoke of the anguish of having divorced parents, which he said left him with “a sense of diminished the self-esteem”.
