The role of the volume control buttons on iPhone phones is not limited to that task only, but it goes beyond it to include other tasks such as taking photos and shooting videos.
Take photos and videos
Open the camera, and press either volume button, you will be able to take a selfie. For video, change the camera mode to video and also press either volume button, your phone will start recording.
Send distress messages
Users can send an SOS message by holding down the power button and one of the volume buttons. This will send the text to the emergency services and any contacts you previously described as an emergency.
Turn off the alarm
When the alarm rings, you can press either volume button to snooze the alarm and have it sound once more following nine minutes.
Reboot the phone
Start by holding the Volume Up button, let go, and then do the same with the Volume Down button.
Mute the incoming call
Pressing either volume button will silence normal incoming calls, and will stop vibrations if your phone is on vibrate mode.
