“This announcement represents a major step forward for infant health. Alongside an information campaign reminding parents of simple preventive measures and what to do in the event of symptoms, the deployment of this new treatment will be one of the major challenges of the new school year and the demonstration that prevention and care policy are intimately linked,” says Aurélien Rousseau.
This national campaign will be accompanied by the Professor Christele Gras-Le Guen, university professor in paediatrics, head of the general pediatrics and pediatric emergencies department at Nantes University Hospital. To be effective, the information messages must be relayed in complementarity by all the actors involved, firstly by the health professionals in contact with the parents within the framework of the “singular patient-doctor conference” and their relationship of trust.
The treatment will be available next september and will make it possible to extend the prevention of severe forms of bronchiolitis, via a single injection, to all newborns and infants during their first exposure to this virus.
Health establishments and town pharmacies will be able to order the treatment made available by the State without patient billing.
Each year 2-3% of infants under one year of age are hospitalized for severe bronchiolitis with approximately 45,000 hospitalizations associated with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), including 69% in children under one year of age. Bronchiolitis affects nearly 30% of infants under 2 years of age each winter, or approximately 480,000 cases per year, and RSV is responsible for the majority of bronchiolitis.
