PR 2060 brings methodology to offset carbon emissions

Companies in Brazil now have a methodology to quantify and offset carbon emissions, as set out in Recommended Practice (PR) 2060, launched in July 2023 by the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT). The document also brings requirements that must be observed by organizations, governments and institutions to demonstrate that they reduce carbon emissions in their activities.

According to ABNT, PR 2060 was presented, for the first time, at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 27), held in Egypt, in 2022. The document also brings new concepts and ISO international standards linked to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

PR 2060 was born amid the urgent and systemic need for a transformation in the electrical, industrial, transport and construction sectors, as well as in the food and financial systems, as highlighted by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The global environmental authority points out, in a general context, that the international community is very far from the Paris objectives of limiting global warming to 1.5°C.

Still in relation to the high heat waves, a warning issued by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) highlights that 2023 may be the hottest year on record. Furthermore, there is a 66% probability that the average annual temperature near the global surface between 2023 and 2027 will stay more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for at least one year.

In turn, such guidelines may collaborate with the generation of new jobs in Brazil, since the country is part of Latin America, a region that might create 15 million new net jobs by 2030 with the transition to an economy with zero net emissions of carbon, as highlighted by the International Labor Organization (ILO).

For the founder and main executive of the Latin American Quality Institute (LAQI), Daniel Maximilian Da Costa, Brazilian companies now have a guide that collaborates in the organization and guidance for decision-making. He claims that a company that maintains good management generates positive reflections on its reputation.

“Adopting measures that are in line with sustainability is essential for the smooth running of a business. Quality is totally related to this quest, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the guidelines linked to the ESG tripod and trained specialists fear not prove it. I believe that, on a national level, these new guidelines are enough to collaborate in the quest to reduce carbon emissions”, he concludes.
