The first jellyfish swam around half a billion years ago – paleontology

Jellyfish are obviously an evolutionary recipe for success: the umbrella-shaped water creatures have existed on earth for at least half a billion years and, at first glance, have hardly changed at all during this long period of time. This makes them and their relatives from the cnidarian tribe (which also includes corals and sea anemones) one of the oldest animals in the history of the earth. How long these filigree swimmers have actually existed was previously unclear, because reasonably well-preserved fossils from the early days of life are extremely rare.
