Pike, sea bream, John Dory: the fish all have one thing in common. Beyond the fact that they are tasty, they all contain a lot of bones and can therefore represent a health risk. Hence the importance of being extremely vigilant during meals. Unfortunately, a 51-year-old man had a very bad experience, a sad story published in the European Heart Journal and reported by the Sun. This 50-year-old fought for his life following swallowing a fishbone that pierced his heart.
But, surprisingly, he didn’t feel bad immediately. It was only two weeks later that he began to notice an anomaly. Feverish, he therefore went to the emergency room. There, he unfortunately tested positive for Staphylococcus aureus, a common bacterial infection that enters the body through the skin.
A heart operation
Faced with this situation and in order to avoid any complications, they therefore decided to perform a cardiac CT scan which revealed a “foreign body” embedded in the pulmonary vein. He was therefore forced to undergo a heart operation during which the doctors discovered a fishbone of 25 mm. Fortunately, the surgery went smoothly and the man was able to recover thanks to the antibiotics.
As a reminder, each year, staphylococcus kills regarding 1.1 million people, according to the World Health Organization. The bacteria that cause staph infections live harmlessly on the skin of many people, usually in the nose, armpits and buttocks. They usually only cause an infection if they enter the skin through a bite or a cut, for example. And while it usually goes away on its own without the need for antibiotics, the infection can sometimes be more serious and cause blood poisoning or toxic shock syndrome.
