The 27th edition of the Grands Feux Loto-Québec began Tuesday evening at the Place des Canotiers de Québec. Several hundred people arrived hours in advance to grab the best seats for the first of eight performances scheduled for August.

“We used to come here, it’s been four years [lors des éditions 2017, 2018, 2019 et 2022] that we come to all the shows, says Engy Lalancette, a man from Quebec, accompanied by his four children and his wife. We know the kids love it and we have a great night out every time. »

Like Mr. Lalancette, others are well aware of the importance of arriving early to have an unobstructed view of the sound and light show. At Passage du Journal, several hours before the start of the fireworks, many families and groups of friends were already comfortably installed near Pier 22.

Tourists on the lookout

According to the event director of the Grands Feux, François Brunet, the handful of events attract approximately 700,000 pairs of eyes, including several from elsewhere in the province or around the world, in Quebec and Lévis.

Marie-Pierre Lajeunesse, who came to Quebec with cousins for a few days, is one of the curious tourists.

“We knew there was that tonight and we decided to come and settle in early with our chairs to get the best seats. This is the first time we have come to see those from Quebec, but we did not want to miss it because we have often seen them in Montreal, ”explains the resident of Joliette on vacation.

For Éric Sauvé, Gabrielle Therrien and their five young children, Tuesday evening was an opportunity to introduce the “most impressive fireworks in Quebec” to their offspring.

“We have already been here when it was happening near Montmorency Falls. We are passing through Quebec from Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines and we decided to come and show it to the children. It’s a great event and what’s more, it’s free”, underlines the father of the family.

Eco-responsibility

Well aware of the recriminations of some in relation to the undeniable impact of fireworks on the environment, François Brunet maintains that the organization of the Grands Feux is stepping up its efforts to reduce its footprint at each performance.

“Last year, we did a test with 10% of the pyrotechnic material that was eco-responsible,” he explains. We managed to offer the same quality of entertainment, so this year it went up to 30%. If it is, as our Quebec supplier improves its product, we will be able to increase the proportion more and more. »
