Did Alfonso Ugarte jump off the hill?

The official narrative tells us that he takes a Peruvian flag and throws himself off the nose and falls off a cliff. And it is what we have all grown up with and indeed there are witnesses who say that they have seen the skeleton of a destroyed horse whitening in the sun at the foot of the nose, but there are also testimonies from Chilean officers who mention that, following the battle was over and Bolognesi and More, they find the corpse of Alfonso Ugarte in a shack hidden by some women, the so-called rabonas.

An eternal controversy…

So at least the seed of doubt leaves you, right? What is the point of saying that Ugarte jumped on a horse and why would Chileans want to say that he didn’t jump? Why would they want to take away from us the epic figure of a hero who dove off his nose to prevent me from capturing his flag? That is research matter.

Don’t we Peruvians know much regarding Ugarte?

Alfonso Ugarte is an exquisite character to explore. He was a man with a lot of money, a young millionaire who, with his money, equips a battalion of 400 men, dresses them, shoes them, and arms them to defend Peruvian interests in the south. He was not a career soldier, what was used at the time was: “Ok, you have given so much money to arm soldiers, we are going to make you a colonel.” And so he became Colonel Alfonso Ugarte.

A hero…

He was a very brave and civic man, he had even been a firefighter to give you an idea.
