Metastatic bladder cancer, which is difficult to cure, has opened up the possibility of treatment through the discovery of new drugs.
According to Seoul National University Bundang Hospital on the 2nd, a research team led by Professor Lee Sang-cheol of the Department of Urology discovered a new drug through a ‘3D spheroid model’ and revealed the possibility of treating metastatic bladder cancer resistant to anticancer drugs.
Spheroid refers to a circular aggregate of cells cultured in three dimensions, and unlike cells cultured in two dimensions in a culture dish, it is characterized by reflecting the structure and function of cells very similarly.
Accordingly, the research team established a bladder cancer spheroid model that mimics the characteristics of actual bladder cancer, confirmed that CUDC-907, a drug developed as a treatment for large B-cell lymphoma, inhibits the growth, mobility and invasiveness of bladder cancer spheroids, and identified the mechanism. conducted research to do this.
CUDC-907 has been clinically studied in large B-cell lymphoma, thyroid cancer, and breast cancer, but this is the first study on bladder cancer.
As a result of the study, CUDC-907 not only reduced the size and cell viability of bladder cancer spheroids depending on the concentration, but also significantly inhibited the migration and invasiveness of cancer cells.
In addition, the research team proved that the anti-cancer mechanism of CUDC-907 is achieved by suppressing the ‘epithelial-mesenchymal transition’ that plays an important role in metastasis of cancer cells and inducing the death of cancer cells.
Professor Sang-Cheol Lee said, “It is meaningful in that the bladder cancer spheroid model was used to discover a new drug that overcomes the anticancer resistance mechanism in metastatic bladder cancer, an incurable disease.” It seems that it can be used for drug screening for new drug development.”
Meanwhile, the results of this study were published in the international oncology journal ‘Oncology Reports’.
