Belgian-Moroccan Fugitive Ibrahim Akhlal Arrested in Mauritania: Update on International Manhunt

The Belgian-Moroccan Ibrahim Akhlal, aged 27 and known to Belgian justice, was arrested in Mauritania, a month following his escape from prison in Conakry, Guinea, a federal police spokesman said on Tuesday. confirming information from Het Laatste Nieuws.

The arrest was made by local authorities on July 14 in Mauritania, on the border with Morocco, federal police said.

The individual had already escaped from Saint-Gilles prison in March 2020. He had been sentenced to several sentences in Belgium for robberies, accumulating 21 years in prison.

Ibrahim Akhlal is also in the crosshairs of Dutch justice, suspected of having participated in a theft of gold and precious stones in Amsterdam in May 2021. In March of the following year, the Belgian federal police had launched an advisory international search for this Belgian-Moroccan, at the request of the Dutch authorities.

Ibrahim Akhlal was then arrested in Conakry in December 2022. He was imprisoned there but also managed to escape in June 2023, before finally being found in Mauritania.

Belgium will request his extradition, the federal police announced.
