What are the details of the Alzheimer’s vaccine?

The British newspaper “Daily Mail” said that a study conducted on mice concluded that the experimental vaccine not only “removed harmful deposits from the brain, but also prevented behavioral changes that usually affect Alzheimer’s patients.” The source described the results of the new study, which is still ongoing, as “promising”. It comes following a year in which two groundbreaking drugs proved they might slow the disease, ending decades of failed trials. The newspaper stated that despite the progress made, these treatments only give patients a few extra months of “healthy life.”

“big step”

Shih-Lun Hsiao, a cardiovascular researcher at Juntendo University in Japan, said:

If the vaccine proves successful in humans, it would be a huge step toward delaying or even preventing the development of the disease. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 50 to 70 percent of dementia patients worldwide. Testing of the new vaccine points to a possible way to prevent or modify the disease. A future challenge will be to achieve similar results in humans.

It is noteworthy that regarding 55 million people around the world suffer from Alzheimer’s, including regarding 6.7 million in the United States, and regarding 900 thousand others in the United Kingdom.
