For the second consecutive day, the planet Earth had the day with the highest average temperature ever recorded. On July 4th, according to US government data, the global average temperature was 17°C.

The record had been broken the day before, with 17ºC and, therefore, sets a mark break in two consecutive days. Due to intense and lasting summer heat waves in the northern hemisphere, experts estimate that this record for the hottest day in history might be broken several times in 2023.

Before the records of the first week of July, the highest average recorded had been in 2016, with 16°C.

Influence of fuels

Fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, are among the energy sources that most contribute to this warming. These non-renewable energy sources currently provide regarding 80% of the world’s energy, according to data published by EDP. When they are burned, they release carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases (GHG), which trap heat in our atmosphere and are primarily responsible for global warming and climate change.

For André Lavor, CEO of Binatural, a change in consumption habits is necessary. “In the context of global warming, some measures such as raising awareness of the environmental benefits of biofuels, including their reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, can be a way out of what we are facing.”

The CEO also argues that in addition to reducing dependence on fossil fuels, the implementation of favorable policies and regulations that define and meet an achievable blending target; Continuous investment in research and development in the use of sustainable raw materials can drive the adoption of biofuels.

“Public-private partnerships can facilitate the sharing of knowledge, resources and experience, as well as the development of biofuels infrastructure, directly contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the mitigation of global warming”, concludes Lavor.
