During the event, she reinforced the importance of milk banks and celebrated the collection of more than ten thousand liters of milk in the first six months of 2023
The Secretary of Health of the Federal District, Lucilene Florêncio, participated in the opening of the World Breastfeeding Week, this Monday (31), at the headquarters of the World Health Organization (WHO), in Brasília. During the event, she reinforced the importance of milk banks and celebrated the collection of more than ten thousand liters of milk in the first six months of 2023.
“I cannot fail to mention the valuable work of the Federal District Fire Department, which knocks on every door and actively searches. Even with the good results, it is necessary to continue encouraging donations. We have an average of 300 children in the ICU who need this milk every month, ”he pointed out.
Lucilene Florêncio also highlighted the importance of the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP) and of preceptors and trainers of future doctors to avoid milk formulas. “There isn’t a country with children that are strong and protected with artificial milk. Not only in the first months, the eating disorders that pediatricians see in their offices happen throughout the lives of these children”, said the manager.
Carla Graziella Souza, 37 years old, civil servant, is the mother of Sarah Vitória, who is only 10 months old. She attended the event to support the breastfeeding campaign. “I’ve always breastfed Sarah and I realize that it was a differential in terms of illness. She is a very strong child, almost never gets sick. Including, at this time of seasonal viruses, it became very resistant, “she said.
She adds that the period of maternity leave, the father’s participation and the provision of a space at work to collect milk were fundamental to establish a bond with the baby and have the structure to breastfeed with peace of mind. “Everything the baby eats in the first thousand days will make a difference for its future”, said the mother.
Breastfeeding rooms at UBSs
From now on, breastfeeding rooms will be part of the construction projects for basic health units (UBSs). A pilot project by the Ministry of Health is in the process of implementing these spaces in units that are already in operation, starting in five states: the Federal District, Paraná, Pará, Paraíba and São Paulo. The initiative aims to support working mothers, especially those who are in the informal market and are not supported by legislation.

The measure was announced to celebrate breastfeeding month, whose theme this year is Support Breastfeeding: Make a Difference for Working Moms and Dads. The Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade, recalled that breastfeeding is just as important as vaccination when it comes to protecting children. “Breastfeeding is demonstrably responsible for reducing child mortality in many countries, as well as in Brazil”, declared the minister.
Golden August
The breastfeeding campaign celebrated during the month of August, entitled Golden August, aims to reduce child mortality. In 2001, due to the evidence of the superiority of human milk, the WHO started to adopt exclusive breastfeeding for six months as a recommendation. Around six million lives are saved each year due to the increase in exclusive breastfeeding rates up to the sixth month of life, according to the WHO and the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef).
The Health Secretariat (SES) will offer a varied program for the population of the DF regarding the importance of breastfeeding. One of the highlights of the schedule of events is the public act alluding to World Breastfeeding Week, which will be held in the Chamber of Deputies, on August 10, at 1 pm.
