Before the start of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, FIFA had announced that for the first time in the tournament all the players of the participating teams were going to receive a payment of $30,000 dollars and that as the tournament progressed the amount would increase.

The president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, during a press conference said that he can no longer guarantee that payment and that it now depends on each federation.

The payment problem

Unlike the previous championships, this one stood out for the implementation of new formulas that were supposed to help the soccer players to dignify their work as athletes, since it is undeniable that the wage gap between men’s and women’s soccer exists.

FIFA’s initiative is historic, since many times many federations do not even ensure the payment of the prizes that the players win for their participation and even the payments are dissolved in investments that are not the responsibility of the soccer players. The fact that the payments were regulated by FIFA was a good start to recognize the players and that they receive remuneration for their participation in the World Cup.

Infantino ensured that the figure reached the hands of the players through the soccer federation to which they belong, which in this way facilitates the fiscal processes that vary according to each country and soccer player:

“We are moving in the right direction, we have begun to consult with the associations, with the players, to try to find the right path (…) We have given these recommendations, but we have an association of associations. Any payments we make we will make through the associations, and then the associations will of course make the relevant payments to their players. We are in contact with all the associations”.

Despite FIFA’s disagreement with the payment, to be received by the soccer players is a historic salary, since on average, the salary of the players is $14,000 dollars, without taking into account several cases such as the Betplay League, which even recently implemented real and binding contracts for the participation of the teams.
