The German supermarket chain Penny has applied a dizzying but temporary price increase to several food products since Monday, including the environmental costs linked to their production to raise consumer awareness.
The idea is to offer nine everyday consumer products, from sausages to yogurt, at “true cost”, including “the effects on the soil, climate, water and health”, explains the brand specializing in hard -discount.

The operation, prepared with experts in food economy, is organized until August 5 in the 2,150 Penny stores in Germany.
For some foods, prices are almost doubled: a packet of Massdam cheese goes from 2.49 to 4.84 euros, pork sausages from 3.19 to 6.01 euros, a ball of mozzarella from 0.89 at 1.55 euros.
For a vegan food, the extra cost is only 14 cents.
“These invisible costs are inevitably generated along the supply chains, but are not or only partially reflected in the selling price”, assures the company.
Penny says she wants to “lay the groundwork for a broader discussion regarding food”.
. “We hope for an impetus to consider this cost in one way or another”, even if there is no question of passing on the real costs to the consumer, for reasons of social justice, specified Amelie Michalke, researcher from the University of Greifswald (north) who participated in the project.
The additional revenue earned by Penny will be donated to a foundation for farmers embarked on an ecological transition of their farm, according to the distributor, a subsidiary of the Rewe group, Germany’s number three food retailer.
Inflation remains at a very high level in Germany, at 6.2% in July over one year and down slightly by 0.2 points compared to June.
