As indicated health magazinethis treatment, called Zuranolone, comes in the form ofone pill to take daily for regarding 15 days.
An improvement in depressive symptoms
“The drug is not an antidepressant, it is a steroid that reduces symptoms by balancing the firing of neurons in networks involved in mood and behavior. After two weeks, the patient stops taking them and consults his doctor for the next few weeks,” the research team said in a press release.
To test the effectiveness of this pill, the researchers conducted a study with 170 women who had recently given birth and in whom severe postpartum depression had been detected. The first half of the participants followed the treatment, taking the drug every day, while the second received a placebo.
The results, published in theAmerican Journal of Psychiatry, Wednesday, July 26, 2023, showed promise. Indeed, the experts realized that “all women saw their depressive symptoms improve, but only those who received the drug reported significant and continuous improvements (for four to six weeks)“, they conclude in their report.
