The event was attended by thousands of Dominicans.

NEW YORK.- Thousands of people with flags of the Dominican Republic, güira and tambora lined up this Sunday along the Grand Concourse avenue, in the eastern part of this city to participate in The Great Dominican Parade of The Bronxon its 34th anniversary.

Dozens of floats from public and private companies as well as political parties paraded from 181 to 167 streets in this New York county along with comparsas, folkloric groups (such as roba la gallina, diablos cojuelos and piglets) artists, and cultural, baton ballets and cultural and religious associations.

Moreno Arias, Senator from Montecristi and Grand Marshal of the event, along with Deputy Abel Lora participated with joy in the event, dedicated to this northwestern province of the Dominican Republic.

Moreno described his province positively and highlighted the sports figures Osvaldo Virgil and Juan Marichal.

Consul Eligio Jáquez, assembly members George Álvarez and Yudelka Tapia also spoke from a platform. Others present were Mayor Eric Adams; the Police Commissioner, Edward Cabán; the Bronx Borough President, Venesa Gibson; prosecutor Darcel Clark; the political leaders of Dominican origin Ramfis Trujillo and Yomare Polanco, the dean of Hostos, Ana Reyes; Councilman Rafael Salamanca and the Vice Minister for Dominican Communities Abroad and Executive Director of INDEX, Carlos de la Mota.

Both the president of the Great Parade, Felipe Febles, and the masters of ceremonies, mentioned the name of the recently deceased entity’s vice president, David Williams, several times.

Consul Jáquez highlighted the growth of the Dominican community, not only in the Bronx, but throughout New York City and the United States in the last 34 years.

Among the Dominican politicians who paraded were, in addition to Ramfis, Ramón Alburquerque, Carlos Peña and directors of the sections of the People’s Force, Modern Revolutionary, Dominican Liberation, Dominican Revolutionary and Institutional Democrat parties.

Congressman Adriano Espaillat, although he participated in the parade, did not take the stage. The absence of the majority of the elected officials, who are of Dominican origin, was also notorious.

The county of The Bronx appears as the one with the greatest presence of Dominicans in the Big Apple. There are an estimated 500,000, but this year the parade attendance was relatively low, around 100,000 people.

This parade began in 1989 to show the folklore, culture and tradition of the Dominican Republic. It was sponsored by Productos Goya, Café Santo Domingo, Cibao Meat Products, Coca Cola, Coors Light, Delta, Corona, Turismo de DR, Gigantes del Cibao, Induban, Infinit Sound, Key Food and Lehman College.
