Princess Delphine, a resident of Uccle, responded to the mayor’s call for this tribute to the man who was “a king with exceptional human qualities”, as Boris Dilliès mentioned. “These various photographs of Baudouin’s reign should make it possible to remember. Let’s take the time to reflect on his heritage. This exhibition should recall the ideals that he carried throughout his reign”, added the Uccle city councilor in front of around fifty people gathered for this thirtieth anniversary of the death of the fifth King of the Belgians.
The indelible legacy of King Baudouin
“These photos are striking,” admitted Princess Delphine. “It is very important for me to commemorate a member of my family, for whom I have great admiration. He left much too soon. I am very proud to be able to honor him in the town where I live”, commented the one who learned of the death of her uncle “in France, while I was at a sporting event with friends”. “This announcement made a strong impression on me. I was very shocked because he died very young,” she concluded before exchanging a few words with the audience.
These are a dozen photos, obtained thanks to the Royal Palace, which are enthroned on the gates of the royal observatory. These represent the various stages of King Baudouin’s life, from his first months in the arms of Queen Elizabeth to his royal missions, including the delivery of a bicycle by Eddy Merckx or his official portrait. The exhibition is free to discover until August 31.
