Finding an affordable student accommodation becomes difficult. Supply is low compared to demand. This causes a rise in housing prices among individuals: more than 10% compared to last year.
340 euros per month is the price of a classic flat in Louvain-la-Neuve… It was 310 euros a year ago. An increase due to the campus energy contract that the university had to renegotiate.
“The university has a very large housing stock: 5,750 housing units. And so that makes it possible to negotiate contracts with energy suppliers over a long period. But, at some point, these contracts come to an end. So the university has renegotiated these contracts and there was a slight increase”specifies Isabelle De Coster, the spokesperson for UCLouvain.
Four out of five students rent private accommodation
The average rent for student accommodation in Belgium is 440 euros per month. But in Brussels, it is 500 euros. This site offers kots in the capital. They can be found at 605 euros, or 620 for 15 square meters… Or even 695 euros for 20 square meters. All this excluding charges.
Prices that restrict accessibility to studies. For student federations, it is time to react.
“There are four out of five students who rent private accommodation. So, you have to be able to influence these prices by putting a grid, because the private market wants to be able to make more profits. Whereas in the public market, if we invest more kots at affordable prices, this market will make it possible to have quality accommodation at a reduced price to allow the student to be able to study in the best conditions”believes Emila Hoxhaj, the president of the FEF, the Federation of French-speaking students.
The rent grids are currently not binding for individuals. About 10,000 kots are missing in Brussels. A shortage that will only get worse as the number of students continues to increase.
