Russia launched renewed attacks on southern Ukrainian cities on Monday, killing at least two civilians and wounding 12 others, according to authorities. In the city of Kryvyi Rih, home of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, two Russian rockets hit a nine-story apartment building and a university building. According to initial findings by the Ministry of the Interior, one man died in the apartment building and ten other people were injured.
People are said to be buried under both buildings, the ministry wrote on Telegram. The rescue work was going on. Video shared on social media showed a gaping hole in a nine-story burning building. In mid-June, several people died in a rocket attack on a five-story residential building in Zelenskyy’s hometown.
Meanwhile, authorities in Russia’s border regions with Ukraine reported new drone attacks and damage. The Ukrainian armed forces had carried out an attack on a government building in the Trubchevsk area on Monday night, the governor of the Bryansk region, Alexander Bogomas, told Telegram. There is damage to the roof and windows of the building. So there were no injuries.
In the Rostov region, Governor Vasily Golubev also reported destruction in the settlement of Daraganovka following an incident involving a drone. Experts from the Ministry of Defense have now clarified their origin. A house and a car were damaged, Golubev said of the incident on Sunday evening. Nobody was injured. Videos of a destroyed building following an explosion circulated on social networks, smoke rose from the rubble. Residents reported massive damage.
Ukraine also reported heavy fighting with the Russian invasion troops, especially in the north-east of the country. Zelenskyi described Sunday as “a good day, a strong day” on the front lines, particularly near the town of Bakhmut, which was captured by Russian troops in May following months of fighting. Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maljar reported that the Ukrainian armed forces held their positions despite massive Russian attacks and in some cases pushed back the enemy. In the south, Ukraine has now recaptured 200 square kilometers in its counter-offensive. But the advances are limited because of the heavily fortified positions of the Russian army and minefields.
In Moscow, the situation was presented differently on Monday. As Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, the Ukrainian counter-offensive has had only limited success so far. NATO military aid to Ukraine was “wasted” in the counter-offensive launched two months ago. Peskov also announced additional measures to counter Ukrainian drone attacks. Moscow’s financial district was attacked with drones on Sunday.
